Randolph Mantooth
The keynote address was followed by the 9-1-1 Hero Award Program. There were 19 heroes honored for their exceptional involvement in making, handling or assisting with 9-1-1 emergency calls. The youngest ever honoree, Jaden Bolli age 3, was honored for making a 9-1-1 call when his grandmother fell ill. His mom had just taught him how to call 9-1-1 earlier in the week! Other youth heroes included Caitlyn and Ashley Marcucci who called 9-1-1 when their mother suffered a stroke and Lamia Saeed who also called 9-1-1 for her mother. Several citizens were honored including Kevin Reed who called 9-1-1 when a woman jumped from an overpass onto Route 295 supplying information on her condition and protected her from further injury by blocking traffic with his vehicle. Two persons from New Jersey radio station 101.5 were honored for assisting in locating a missing Alzheimer’s patient. Steven Griess, the show’s producer took the information supplied by Old Bridge Public Safety Telecommunicator Frank Stefanelli and radio personality Thomas Gordon (Tommy G) announced the information during his show. NJ Transit bus operator Martin Heraghty was honored for locating the missing person along his route. PST Stefanelli was honored for his use of non-traditional resources and “thinking outside the box.” Ten other telecommunicators were honored for their outstanding call handling. After the opening ceremonies, conference participants had an exclusive exhibit hour to visit the vendor’s booths to see the latest in 9-1-1 equipment and services. They were also able to visit with Mr. Mantooth who had a booth to sign autographs, and take photos. Monies from sales at his booth were donated to the County of Los Angeles Fire Museum. Following the time with the exhibitor hour, a luncheon in honor of the 9-1-1 heroes was served. There were training programs offered in three topical tracks, Line Personnel & General Interest, Supervisory and Technical. In total there were over twenty informative sessions on topics ranging from “Customer Service the 9-1-1 Way” to “The Impact of Next Generation 9-1-1 on PSAPs and Systems”. Presenters traveled from all over the county and Canada to provide these professional classes. The training programs were reviewed by OETS and approved for a total of 11.5 hours of continuing telecommunications education credit. Each participant received a certificate of participation by NJ NENA. The second day of the conference started with breakfast with the exhibitors. The NJ NENA annual meeting was called to order after breakfast. First on the agenda was approval of the changes to the Chapter by Laws. The changes were presented by VP Ray Strilec. A motion was made and seconded to approve the changes and the motion passed unanimously. Next was the announcement of the results of the election. Secretary Bonnie Hueg announced that only the position of North Region Vice President had two candidates, Father John Fencik of Bayonne PD 9-1-1 and Joseph Goralski of Morris County 9-1-1. Father Fencik was the successful candidate. The Executive Board for 2010-2011 is: President Ray Kenny, 1st Vice President Ray Stirlec, 2nd Vice President Gareth Williams, North Region Vice President Father John Fencik, Central Region Vice President Jeanette Nielsen, South Region Vice President Monica Gavio, Private Sector Vice President Bob Gojanovich, Treasurer Sandy Mangini and Secretary Bonnie Hueg. No successful conference could go on without the help of volunteers. We all owe thanks to this year’s volunteers: Robert Anderson, Patty Burd, Judy Hawkins, Audrey Kenny, Danny Medina, Patty Walsh, and our photographer Diane Tilly. Plans are already underway for next year's conference when we will return to the Taj Mahal April 19-20, 2011. Watch the NJ-NENA website for updates. Click here for pictures of the conference. |
